The International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association will recognize licenses from around the world at this year’s Licensing Excellence Awards on June 20 at the New York Marriott Marquis in Times Square. The awards will be presented in Art, Character, Corporate, Film, Television & Entertainment, Retailer, and Promotions, as well as the overall Best License of the Year. In addition to acknowledging the Best Property of the Year within each category, awards will be presented for the Best Licensee Hard Goods and Best Licensee Soft Goods. LIMA revised the process by which nominated properties and products are reviewed and evaluated this year, resulting in a more measurable system that is fair to all nominees. Nominations were solicited from the entire licensing industry based on a list of categories and criteria. For the first time, all nominees for the overall property of the year in each category will be on display at the show.  



A “KEWL” New Brand Targets ’Tweens


DIC Entertainment,

Geffen Records, and Poets Road will launch KEWL, an all-new brand for ’tweens, with a celebrity music-driven branded magazine, a Website, and a television review series in development tentatively called “Everything KEWL.” The first issue of

KEWL

magazine is on shelves at retailers such as Claire’s, FYE, Sam Goody, Skechers, Suncoast, and Toys “R” Us, with the second issue due in June.

KEWL

focuses on the worlds of music, television, and movies in addition to featuring fashion, quizzes, advice, horoscopes, and posters. A new Website, www.kewlmag.com, also features exclusive contests and user-submitted content. The “Everything KEWL” TV review series will be hosted by SPG: The Slumber Party Girls with each episode featuring information and reviews on movies, games, music, TV, gadgets, and style for ’tweens.


 


Macy’s Creates In-Store Shop for Hello Kitty


Macy’s Herald Square in New York has rolled out the pink carpet for Hello Kitty with an in-store shop in its 7th floor girl’s department. The 165-square-foot shop is home to a collection of sportswear and accessories as well as cosmetics, plush, and activity sets that will be changed out every eight to 10 weeks. The shop will remain intact for the next year, with seasonal product including cold-weather gear (hats, gloves, scarves) and back-to-school supplies to be added during the appropriate times.



ESPN Teams Up with Hallmark for Father’s Day


ESPN Consumer Products is setting up shop at Hallmark Gold Crown stores with a line of gifts and cards due in stores for Father’s Day (June 17). The line of serving trays, pint glasses, chip bowls, mugs, and frames, as well as greetings cards and stationery items will have a front-of-store presence through June and then be blended into the planogram going forward.




Interactive Video Game Due for Holidays


Harmonix, developer of Guitar Hero; MTV: Music Television; and Electronic Arts partnered on Rock Band, an all-new platform for music fans and gamers to interact with music like never before. Using rock music from today’s biggest names, gamers can form a virtual band using drum, bass/lead guitar, and microphone peripherals, in addition to offering deep online connectivity. EMI Music Publishing and Warner/Chappell Music are allowing unrivaled access to their catalogs for use in the game, while record labels EMI Music, Hollywood Records, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group’s Universal Music Enterprises, and Warner Music Group’s Rhino Entertainment have agreed to supply master recordings by their artists for use in the game. Rock Band is slated for release on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 for holiday 2007.


  


Comics for Free


Spiderman, Transformers, and Family Guy are among the comic books being given away for free at this year’s Free Comic Book Day on Sat., May 5. Nearly 2,000 comic book stores worldwide participate in the annual event, which celebrates the medium’s energy, vitality, and boundless creativity. The event also invites new readers to visit their local comic shops and see what comics have to offer. Many of the participating retailers will also hold complimentary in-store events, including signings by top writers and artists. The official Website,

Charlie and Lola Inspire Apparel Collection


Charlie and Lola will star in a line of apparel from Children’s Apparel Network. The line launches with T-shirts in spring followed by sweatshirts, fashion tops, and sweaters, as well as swimwear, playwear, and activewear for infants, toddlers, and girls for holiday 2007. The new apparel deal for the BBC Worldwide Ltd. series was brokered by The Wildflower Group, North American licensing agent.



New Jakers! Deal Signed


Entara Limited will assume distribution responsibilities for Jakers! The Adventures of Piggley Winks in a deal with Taffy Entertainment. The announcement comes less than a year after Entara created a dedicated in-house distribution division designed to expand its global reach, led by Regis Brown, formerly of Taffy Entertainment. Entara will oversee the ongoing distribution activities of Jakers!, now with 52 episodes completed and seen in more than 100 countries. The two companies will continue to work together on the development and production of new episodes and a feature film.  



Trio Creates Global TV Channel


Sparrowhawk Media, DIC Entertainment, and Nelvana Enterprises are launching KidsCo, a 24/7 multi-platform global television channel for children and families. The first launch of KidsCo is anticipated this fall in Central and Eastern Europe with subsequent premieres throughout 2008 and 2009 in approximately 40 territories across Europe, Latin America, and Asia Pacific. The channel will utilize Sparrowhawk’s broadcast distribution facility in the U.S. and its international network of affiliates as well as programming from DIC and Nelvana. In addition, the trio will work together to acquire entertainment from other major children’s content suppliers, produce original properties, and feature family movies. KidsCo programming will be localized market-by-market and will be programmed by day-parts to create a strategic lineup targeting segmented audiences.


 


FUNimation Seeks Licensees for New Series


FUNimation Entertainment’s Shin chan comedy series debuted on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim on Mon., April 9. Shin chan follows the misadventures of its 5-year-old star, Shin Nohara, who has the special ability to annoy his parents, teachers, and any other figure of authority. A licensing program is currently in development with the company seeking master toy, plush, and interactive partners.


 


Cartoon Network Series Strengthens UK Presence


CCI Entertainment’s preschool series Harry and His Bucket Full of Dinosaurs cements its UK presence with an apparel launch this spring that includes leisurewear, outerwear, swimwear, and nightwear from Cohen & Wilks International Ltd. and socks and slipper socks from Samuel Eden & Son Ltd. in summer.



Zappa Family Taps Anthill Trading


Anthill Trading will create a merchandise program for Frank Zappa and the Zappa Plays Zappa concert series starring Dweezil Zappa as part of a deal with the Zappa Family Trust. The agency will work with Frank’s wife Gail on a comprehensive assortment of lifestyle products that will appeal to fans worldwide.
