Marvel Superheroes Star in Dubai


Marvel Entertainment, Inc., will bring its universe of superheroes, including Spider-Man, Iron Man, The X-Men, Incredible Hulk, The Fantastic Four, and Silver Surfer, to Dubai as part of a new theme park being developed by Al Ahli Group. This first-ever global theme park in the region is in keeping with the vision set by HH Sheik Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president and prime minister of the United Arab Emirate and Ruler of Dubai, through his entertainment- and hospitality-driven expansion projects for Dubai and the UAE. The theme park will open in 2011 with a direct investment of over $1 billion.

Turtle Power


Warner Bros. and the Weinstein Co.’s silver screen collaboration, TMNT, a computer-animated update of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics, cartoons, and 1990s live-action movies, debuted as the top weekend flick with $25.45 million, according to studio estimates.


 


Starbucks Strikes An Accord With Concord Music Group


Starbucks and Concord Music Group formed Hear Music, a new record label that will partner with artists and distribute recordings at Starbucks locations as well as through traditional music channels. The deal builds upon past collaborations that include Ray Charles’ “Genius Loves Company” and Sergio Mendes’ “Timeless”. The company will be based in Los Angeles, CA, with Ken Lombard, president of Starbucks Entertainment, serving as chief manager and reporting directly to the management committee. He will work closely with Glen Barros, president of Concord Music Group, on the day-to-day activities of the venture. Concord Music Group also will serve as a creative partner, working collaboratively with Starbucks on promotions, distribution, and marketing for Hear Music outside of Starbucks.


Sweepstakes, Website Commemorate Care Bears Anniversary


American Greetings Properties will celebrate the 25th anniversary of Care Bears by testing fans’ knowledge of the property with The Dodge Grand Caravan Trivia Sweepstakes, an online trivia contest at

It’s Happy Bunny wins public service awards


An anti-drug campaign featuring It’s Happy Bunny won three awards at the 2007 Austin ADDY Awards for advertising excellence in the category of public service.  The campaign, which features a poster and sticker series, and the Website (

), were entered into the competition by the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, Texas Alliance, and earned the organization, along with It’s Happy Bunny artist and creator Jim Benton, Silver awards for Public Service Campaign and Public Service Direct Marketing and a Bronze award for Public Service Poster.


Publishing and Pizza


“Guess How Much I Love You” is being featured in the BOOK IT! Beginners read-aloud program through April 27. Created and sponsored by Pizza Hut, the program will reach an estimated 36,000 preschools and childcare facilitie, where teachers will read aloud to students for at least 60 minutes per week during the eight-week program. At the end of each four-week period, every child will receive a certificate for a free Personal Pan Pizza, redeemable at participating Pizza Hut locations.



Teletubbies’ Wish List

Peking Handicraft Signs On New Clients


Peking Handicraft, Inc., signed new licensing agreements with Be the Ball Foundation and artists Anna Maria Horner, Paris Bottman, and Tim Coffey. The company will create linen towels and coir mats that feature illustrator Bob Commander’s Be the Ball golf ball characters. Peking will translate Anna Maria Horner’s work onto kitchen-themed items including new table linens, runners, napkins, placemats, and guest towels, while its deal with Paris Bottman will result in holiday-themed needlepoint pillows featuring her Red Mittens and Green Stockings collection. Meanwhile, a range of waffle-weave towels is on tap for Tim Coffey’s magical menageries and far-reaching landscapes.  

New DVDs Target Christian Market


Sheepdog Studios, LLC, granted Ten Talents Productions the exclusive licensing rights to produce animated DVD adventures based on the Kidz of the King property for the retail market. The first two DVDs will be based on “Be Not Afraid” and “Created for a Purpose,” from the Kidz of the King Christian-themed comic books.


 


Quickie Cleaning Deal


Reckitt Benckiser signed an exclusive agreement with Quickie Manufacturing to produce a line of cleaning tools in North America under the Airwick brand.



Monster Warriors Fights for International Rights


Coneybeare Studios inked a deal with PorchLight Entertainment for the international TV distribution rights to Monster Warriors, which currently airs on Canada’s YTV network and around the globe. PorchLight Entertainment will bring 52 x 30-minute episodes to MIPTV this spring. Season 1 already has been sold to Australia, Spain, Portugal, Latin America, Singapore, India, and Bosnia, as well as other territories in Eastern Europe.


 


Pelle Pelle Collection to Hit Shelves in 2008


LT Apparel Group has been granted the license to design and distribute children and ’tween sportswear under the Pelle Pelle label due at retail spring 2008. The line, geared toward boys and girls in sizes 2T to 16, will be a denim-driven collection and include coordinate groups and key items influenced by trends in the urban fashion arena.

Following the death of Woolrich, Inc., President and CEO Roswell Brayton, Jr., James Griggs was named president by the Woolrich board of directors, and Charles Aides will assume the responsibilities of chairman of the board. Toys “R” Us, Inc., appointed Karen Dodge senior vice president, chief merchandising officer for Toys “R” Us, U.S. The Licensing Company North America named Matt Levinson as vice president, and Daniel M. Siegel joined IMG Worldwide Licensing as vice president.
