- Walmart will require suppliers to reduce the sodium content of packaged food by 25 percent and added sugars by 10 percent, as well as all remove any industrially-produced trans fats.
- In an effort to make healthier choices more affordable, Walmart will launch a variety of sourcing, pricing, and transportation and logistics initiatives that will drive unnecessary costs out of the supply chain, saving customers approximately $1 billion per year on fresh fruits and vegetables. Also, Walmart will reduce or eliminate the price premium on key “better-for-you” items with reduced sodium, sugar or fat.
- The retailer will develop strong criteria for a simple front-of-package seal to help consumers instantly identify truly healthier food options.
- To improve consumer access, Walmart will build stores in under-served communities that are in need of fresh and affordable groceries.
- Walmart will also increase charitable support for nutrition programs that help educate consumers about healthier food solutions and choices.
