Mind Candy, creator of Moshi Monsters, has acquired the games studio Origami Blue, which will help to build the foundation for the company’s new innovation center, Candy Labs.
Candy Labs will be a research and development studio that experiments with new ideas in children’s entertainment. The division will create new concepts in both the digital and non-digital arenas, as well as acquire and develop third-party properties.
“We clicked creatively with the Origami Blue guys from the outset and are hugely excited to bring them onboard,” says Michael Acton Smith, chief executive officer and founder, Mind Candy. “Developing new IP has always been part of the plan to expand Mind Candy. We have lots of ideas bubbling away and can’t wait to see the new visions come to life.”
Origami Blue was created by ex-Disney Blackrock studios creatives Edd Smith, Mark Knowles-Lee and James Ovnik. Prior to joining Mind Candy the Origami Blue team developed augmented reality apps and worked closely with a team of educational psychologists to develop a touch-typing system for children.
“Joining Mind Candy to help build the foundation for Candy Labs is incredibly enticing as it will allow us to focus purely on what we love–creating quality, playful innovation for future generations,” says Knowles-Lee.
