New seminars focused on international topics have been added to LIMA's Licensing University to take place during June's Licensing International Expo in Las Vegas.

Besides domestic retail opportunities, a variety of sessions will explore prospects in India, the Middle East, China, Latin America and Europe. Some international-focused seminars include:

  • Understanding Consumer Trends and Market Research in Europe (June 7): Roberta Nebbia, founder and managing director of Licensing Italia, will explore consumer trends for licensing products in Western Europe, including scope and size of the market and key retailers. She will also present a three-year study on licensing in the Italian market.

  • Cross-Border Licensing in Europe (June 8): Christian Fortmann, founding partner of Sonnenberg Fortmann (24IP Law Group), will examine the legal and technical considerations important to achieving success in cross-border deals across Europe.

  • Licensing in India, China and the Middle East (June 8): Nagarajan Subramanian, managing partner of En Theos Consulting, will discuss opportunities in the areas, as well as offer insight into their markets and cultural pitfalls to avoid. He will be joined by Dulce Lim-Chen, vice president of Cartoon Network Enterprises in Asia Pacific, and Abdul Salam Al Madani, president of Index Holding, a media and exhibition company, which organizes events in Dubai and United Arab Emirates.

  • Licensing in Latin America (June 9): Mary Hume, founder of Keystone Marketing, will explore licensing opportunities in the region, along with a panel of experts, including Francisco Aguiar, licensing director of Gran TV S.A., sales and licensing agent in Argentina for Discovery Networks; Maca Rotter, vice president of business development for Mexico-based BouncyNet; and Renata Vigna, founder of Brazil-based Smart.

"Knowing how, when and where to utilize licensing to expand the reach of brands in growth markets overseas is more important than ever, given the retail consolidation we see in today's domestic market," says Charles Riotto, president of LIMA, sponsor of Licensing International Expo. "This year's conference lineup includes global-themed sessions that will give marketers the tools and knowledge they need to succeed while avoiding costly pitfalls."

Licensing University runs from June 6 to 9 and includes a free keynote session held on June 8, the opening day of Licensing International Expo. The conference program will kick off with a pre-show state-of-retail session and tour led by Carol Speickerman, a Bentonville, Ariz.-based retail consultant. Other program highlights will include getting a brand ready for licensing, retail strategies beyond the top 10, new property introductions, using demographic trends to grow licensing business and deal structures in the interactive gaming and mobile world.
