HarperCollins has released a range of official tie-in publications for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey as interactive e-books using Apple’s “iBooks Author” app.

The publisher collaborated with Yudu Media to create five titles: The Visual Companion, The Official Movie Guide, The Official Annual, The World of Hobbits and The Movie Storybook.

Features of the multi-touch editions include interactive maps that allow users to explore Hobbiton and Rivendell, puzzles and activities, high resolution images and scrollable galleries and a height chart showing how Bilbo matches up to the goblins.

The e-books were released Thursday by HarperCollins in the U.K., Australia and Canada, and in the U.S. by Houghton Mifflin. In addition to the Apple e-book editions, parallel products will also be available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Google and Kobo.

“Increasingly the publisher is able to add value by understanding how developments within technology and publishing platforms can be best leveraged to benefit our authors and their readers,” says Eric Winbolt, digital creative director, HarperCollins. “We hope these beautiful titles perfectly illustrate these principles, great content married with compelling digital formats to deliver an experience we hope our audience will find to be both delightful and engaging.”
