China's first four Gap stores, as well as an e-commerce site, are to open by the end of the year. Appointments have also been made to lead the expansion efforts.

The first four Gap stores are slated to open in late 2010 in Beijing and Shanghai. The shops will feature Gap adult, GapKids and babyGap products, as well as the 1969 premium jeans brand. The retailer's long-term plans include stores in Hong Kong and other major regions. Gap has also partnered with Shanghai Yi Shang Network Information to launch an online shopping site later this year.

To lead the expansion efforts in China, Gap has appointed Redmond Yeung as president, where he will handle business development and real estate strategy, and Lorenzo Moretti as managing director, to focus on store operations, product-to-market activities and infrastructure development.

"For more than 15 years, we've been increasing our connection to global consumers by offering Gap's American-inspired casual style to now more than 25 countries," says

Glenn Murphy, chairman and chief executive officer of Gap. "Now, after spending a lot of time listening to Chinese consumers and learning more about their shopping preferences, we're excited at the prospect of meeting their fashion needs—initially by bringing our Gap designs to our stores and online later this year."
