The first Carrefour cash-and-carry retail store has opened in India. The 5,200-square-meter store is based in New Delhi.

The new store, called Carrefour Wholesale Cash & Carry, carries food and non-food items to businesses, restaurants and local retailers. In India, laws prohibit multi-brand retailers to sell directly to consumers to protect small local stores.

“The opening of this first store marks Carrefour’s entry into the Indian market and will be followed shortly by the opening of other cash and carry stores,” says Lars Olofsson, Carrefour’s chief executive officer.
