As the season’s round of toy fairs closed with this week’s New York event, the toy industry is braced for a challenging year, but innovation across the toy categories means that retailers will be able to tempt shoppers with new ideas. Key

Key developments looked toward technology to bring new aspects to traditional toys. From plush bears that sing downloaded digital music rather than a pre-recorded voice box, to remote-control cars run on hydrogen rather than batteries, technology was a real driver. And the launch of online communities as an adjunct to physical toys for boys and girls is a development that is likely to grow.

However strapped for cash people are, parents and grandparents always prioritize the children in their families—and toy purchases are protected in that they represent relatively low expenditure.
