ertainly wondering what impact this negative report may have on the sale of team and player apparel, hats, equipment, bobble heads and other novelties, and so on. According to Major League Baseball, licensed products usually gross about $2.3 billion annually at retail. It’s a cash cow for everyone involved, so there is some concern that fans and parents of young fans may have second thoughts about buying that jersey or cap for Christmas or Opening Day in April. Retailers and licensees—as well as MLB itself—will be waiting with bated breath for consumer reaction to sports’ latest black eye.
