From the good news-bad news department: While November retail sales improved after two weak months, the Black Friday surge was short-lived, with business falling off sharply in the final week of the month. The National Retail Federation expects holiday sales to rise 4 percent this year to $474.5 billion, the smallest gain in five years, as the weak housing market and credit crunch make shoppers more conservative.
