While some mass retailers reported a positive hurricane impact as shoppers prepared for the storm, apparel and traditional department stores such as TJX and J.C. Penney lost sales, according to Kantar Retail.

The sales-weighted composite was similar to the 4.8 percent same-store sales gain last month and better than the 3.1 percent gain in August last year.

Tandy Leather Factory posted the biggest increase in retail sales at 32 percent, followed by BJ's Wholesale Club at 11.5 percent, and Costco and Limited Brands at 11 percent.

The biggest decliner was Stein Mart with a decrease of 7.5 percent, according to Kantar Retail.

“Shoppers are clearly moving to curb their spending, although it’s hard to see amid the impact of the hurricane and unavoidable back-to-school spending,” says Frank Badillo, Senior Economist at Kantar Retail.
