ASDA looks likely to give its current chief operating officer, Andy Clarke, the top job of chief executive officer following the sudden resignation of Darren Blackhurst, who reportedly was his internal rival.

U.S.-owned ASDA, a subsidiary of Walmart, has been looking for a new chief executive officer since last month when Andy Bond, the incumbent, announced that he would step up to a part-time chairmanship role, according to published reports. Last month, two other contenders, Judith McKenna, ASDA's chief financial officer, and David Cheesewright, who runs Walmart Canada, ruled themselves out of the running.

If Clarke is appointed, he assumes the role at a crucial time. ASDA has underperformed over recent quarters as Tesco, the market leader, has regained its strength. ASDA declined to comment on Bond's replacement.
